Fed: PM to be bombarded demands for more schools funding
Australians will be urged to bombard Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD with postcards demanding
more federal funds for public schools under a joint campaign by teachers and parents.
The Australian Education Union and the Australian Council of State School Organisations
have joined forces to launch the community campaign.
They say the campaign will highlight cutbacks made to public education under the Howard
government.
Education union deputy federal president JANET GILES says the education system with
responsibility for teaching 70 per cent of Australia's children has missed out on close
to a billion dollars in funding.
The union has again called for the controversial Enrolment Benchmark Adjustment scheme
to be dumped which sees students leaving public schools for private schools taking a share
of government funding with them.
ACCSO president IAN MORGAN says parents have every right to be worried about whether
public education can continue providing quality education.
