M.B.A. program offers real-life business lesson ; Students get rare chance to help corporate leaders shape decision- making

Lancaster University Management School invites corporate leaders like Kevin Roberts, chief executive of Saatchi & Saatchi, to instruct and challenge students in business decision-making.
When Kevin Roberts came to Lancaster University Management School in late May to teach M.B.A. students about corporate strategy, he left his machine gun behind. Mr. Roberts, chief executive of the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, has been a legend in the corporate world ever since he celebrated becoming president of PepsiCo Canada in 1987 by having a Coca-Cola vending machine wheeled on stage while he was giving a speech and shooting at it until it was full of holes.
Mr. Roberts, who was born in Lancaster, left school at 17 and never graduated from university. "I had a difference of opinion on moral philosophy with the headmaster at Lancaster Grammar," he said, explaining that he was expelled after his girlfriend became pregnant. Now a governor of the same school, Mr. Roberts said his association with the university came about because "I wanted to make a difference in my hometown. I wanted to work with tomorrow's leaders, and if you want to find talented young people in a cluster, then a business school is the place to be."
Mr. Roberts's course, called "Strategy in the Making," is part of Lancaster's "Mindful Manager" program, a module in the university's full-time M.B.A. program that focuses on what managers actually do and how they do it. Instead of giving a lecture or describing a historical case study, he gives the students a chance not just to watch corporate decision-making in real time, but to help shape it.
"I share everything with them -- financial information, market information, our internal debate, which companies I'm pitching," he said. "Nothing is confidential. Nothing is withheld. It's as if they were my board."
Each session lasts four hours, with Mr. Roberts, dressed in his trademark black shirt and black jacket, pacing up and down the lecture theater challenging the students with a rapid-fire mix of corporate homilies -- "Business is a blood sport" and "Mindful managing means choosing what you can do and what you can fake" -- personal anecdotes and gentle teasing. When one group urges Mr. Roberts to be more open to collaborating with consumers, he confides "we're considering acquiring a crowd-sourcing company," and goes on to reveal the name of the company and the parameters of the deal.
A student who confesses to having an ambition of living on the most fashionable street of Mumbai one day prompts Mr. Roberts to refer to the main villain in the 1987 movie "Wall Street" and wryly observe that "Gordon Gekko is back with us -- greed is good." But the same student is praised for his honesty and for his commitment to lifting his country's fortunes, along with his own.
"I don't think my role is to hurt them," Mr. Roberts said afterward in an interview. And the students, who come from 19 countries including Azerbaijan, Britain, India, Mongolia and the United States, give as good as they get. Divided into 11 teams during their first session in January, their assignment was to come up with the major strategic challenges facing Saatchi & Saatchi. Reporting to Mr. Roberts in May, nearly every team told him that after 14 years at the helm of the company, finding his own replacement needed to be high on the list.
As Chris Saunders, who directs the school's full-time M.B.A. program, winced visibly, a young man from Bangalore, India, suggested that it might be time for Mr. Roberts to step aside. The chief executive responded with good humor. And when another student appeared to chide Mr. Roberts and his colleagues for failing to foresee the growing importance of social networking, saying, "We were wondering why Saatchi & Saatchi didn't do something like Facebook rather than letting Facebook do Facebook," Mr. Roberts agreed with the critics.
"You've suggested we should have been much more aggressive -- maybe have our own video channel or have our own Internet platform," he told the students. "And I'm going to implement that. Because you are right."
He was so captivated by one student contribution, which declared, "Fear constipates faith," that he offered its author, Jean-Robert Richard from Tobago, a job as a copywriter.
Gaurau Bajaj, a student from Chandigarh, India, whose first degree was in mechanical engineering, said it was precisely the opportunity to interact at such close quarters with business leaders that made him choose Lancaster for his M.B.A. "I have friends in business schools across Europe, and many of them are very happy," he said. "But I don't think any of them can say they are working with a real C.E.O. on live issues, as we can here."
"If I have an idea, I can present it directly to Kevin," Mr. Bajaj added.
During a break, Anil Rao, another student from India, said: "We've all got a mental image of what a top C.E.O. is supposed to look like. But with Kevin what you get is much more than what you expect."
Several students cited "value for money" as another major consideration in their choice of Lancaster. While many M.B.A.'s take 18 months or two years to complete, the full-time program at Lancaster is a one-year course, and tuition costs Pounds 23,000, or about $38,000.
"This experience will stay with our students throughout their whole careers," said Sue Cox, dean of the business school.
Back in the classroom, Mr. Roberts prodded the students for comments and feedback, though his patience does seem to have limits. Student presentations are governed by a strict "10-minute rule," and an assistant is on hand to ring a bell if students go on too long. "If this was Hollywood, you'd get 30 seconds and three lines to sell a screenplay, so this is pretty good," he told them.
Declaring "I'm not asking for volunteers. I'm picking on you," Mr. Roberts had the students critique one another's strategic plans. "You are the C.E.O. reporting to your board of directors. And remember, the further up a company you go, the more stupid you become. So keep it simple."
When he followed the students' appraisals of each group's strategic priorities with his own critique, Mr. Roberts praised their focus on competition and their commitment to innovation. "Where you're weak is in thinking about the client," he said, illustrating his points with a series of references to Saatchi & Saatchi clients like Procter & Gamble and Cadbury. "It's the clients who pay our salaries," he said.
The troubles of one particular client served as an illustration for their next assignment, which was to come up with "the 10 things we have to do over the next 100 days." Referring to the recent earthquake in Japan, he said, "Toyota is 25 percent of my global business. And we've got no cars to sell. What should I do?"
Urging them again to keep their responses brief -- no more than 12 words apiece -- and to make their proposals "measurable and specific" so that they can see if actions have the desired effect, he instructed: "Start your sentences with a verb."
Although his own academic career had been cut short, teaching "does scratch an itch that I missed," Mr. Roberts acknowledges. He also said the experience had brought him more than just emotional satisfaction.
"For me this is free consulting. To reach these kids at a time in their lives when they are so receptive to new ideas is just fantastic."

NSW:Cocaine spike marks NSW crime stats
SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - A spike in drug offences, particularly cocaine use and possession,
marks the latest NSW crime statistics, which also show a significant fall in assaults
at pubs and clubs.
The quarterly NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) figures published
on Tuesday showed drug crime had risen sharply with a 45.4 per cent increase in possession
and/or use of cocaine over the 24 months to September this year.
Possession and/or use of cannabis rose 32.5 per cent over the same period.
Drug trafficking offences overall had risen 68.2 per cent.
Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the fight against drug crime had been going
on for many years.
But he said the "massive increases in the number of people arrested and charged and
put before the courts for carrying, possessing and supplying cocaine was not a bad thing".
BOCSAR director Don Weatherburn said increased drug use was the most likely explanation
for the spike in drug arrests.
There was a nine per cent fall in assaults on licensed premises in the 24 months to
September this year, from 6514 to 5928, attributed to tougher policies against pubs and
clubs known for violence.
There was also a 14 per cent fall in assaults on police officers over the period.
The incidence of nine of the 17 major categories of recorded crime was stable and eight
of them declined in the 24 months to September 2010.
None of the major categories of crime were rising on a statewide basis, the figures showed.
Police Minister Michael Daley told reporters NSW had not been safer for "decades".

SYDNEY, April 30 AAP - The boss of NSW's penal system has called for an overhaul of
prison security after alarming revelations of bent staff, extensive smuggling and escape
plots.
NSW Corrective Services Commissioner Ron Woodham listed a catalogue of crooked behaviour
in jails while giving evidence to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC)
investigation of suspended prison officer Sebastian Wade.
Mr Woodham said jails needed to install new high-tech gadgets to catch corrupt guards,
rather than keep an eye on inmates.
Wade, a senior prison officer, admitted to the inquiry he smuggled cannabis, steroids,
CDs and sunglasses into John Morony Correctional Facility, in northwestern Sydney.
He said he easily dodged the few security measures in place at the medium-security
jail, adding the cannabis kept the jail "quite mellow".
But Mr Woodham said Wade's case was merely the tip of the iceberg.
The inquiry is at least the sixth investigation into smuggling of contraband by prison
officers held by ICAC since 1998.
The corruption watchdog has heard prisoners at John Morony made 1023 calls on smuggled
mobile phones during a three-month period, half of which were said to be about drugs.
Mr Woodham said he was unsurprised at the figures.
"Recently a prisoner at Lithgow made so many more calls than that on a mobile phone
that was smuggled into Lithgow jail," he told the inquiry on Friday.
"So that is alarming, but it doesn't surprise me."
Mr Woodham said he also knew of cases of prison officers dealing drugs and stealing.
"I can remember some incidents at Long Bay and other places where staff were pilfering.
We're talking about a very small number of staff. The majority of our staff are good honest
people," the commissioner said.
"I remember one occasion four years ago where if staff wanted to trade drugs with one
another, one of the safest places would be inside the jail."
Prisoners had escaped from NSW jails and others had been caught hatching elaborate
plans to flee, Mr Woodham said.
He said the issue needed urgent attention, including using new technology to bolster security.
"Security right across the board ... prisoners escaping that shouldn't have escaped,"
Mr Woodham told the inquiry.
"Some of the escape equipment we've found inside the centres is some of the best-made
ladders, things like that, just shouldn't be made ... should be detected.
"It's caused me to discuss with my minister about bringing in a very professional person
to review security in a number of jails and I think about 15 correctional centres in this
department."
Having biometric systems such as iris scanners and finger printing at John Morony may
have prevented Wade from smuggling contraband items, Mr Woodham said.
The technology was already common in high-security prisons, he said.
There should also be greater use of sniffer dogs.
But Mr Woodham stressed the vast majority of prison workers were honest and hard working.
"The absolute majority of prison officers do a great job. They have my absolute admiration,"
Mr Woodham said.
The commissioner said there were currently 31 correctional facilities holding 10,400
inmates in NSW. They are staffed by 3500 prison officers.
The four-day ICAC inquiry ended on Friday.
ICAC Commissioner David Ipp will receive submissions until early May and report his
findings at a later date.

NSW: Hearses carrying slain Lin family arrive for public funeral
SYDNEY, Aug 8 AAP - Five black hearses carrying the bodies of a family brutally murdered
in their Sydney home have arrived at a public funeral service at Olympic Park, which is
being attended by up to 3,000 mourners.
The funeral cortege, which included two flower hearses and a procession of limousines,
pulled up outside the Badgery Pavilion at 10.20 (AEST), beginning what could be a four-hour
public service.
Thousands of mourners from the local Chinese community, and from the community in North
Epping, have descended on the Pavilion to pay their respects to the Lin family, who were
murdered three weeks ago.
Newsagent Min Lin, 45, his wife Yun Li Lin, 43, and their sons Henry, 12, and Terry,
nine, were found bludgeoned in their beds at North Epping on July 18.
Ms Lin's sister Irene Yin, 39, was also killed.
Police are yet to make an arrest or reveal a motive for the murders.
The slayings have shocked and bewildered the North Epping community, in Sydney's north,
many of whom have made the journey to Olympic Park to pay their last respects to the family.
They will also be offering support to the couple's 15-year-old daughter Brenda, who
was overseas on a study trip at the time of the killings.
The Cheltenham Girls High School student has been in hiding and in the care of relatives
since the murders, with police concerned for her safety.
The public memorial, which will be presided over by buddhist monks from the Nan Tien
Temple in Wollongong, begins at 11am with a one-hour service.
At noon, mourners will file past the five caskets, and following Chinese custom, place
money donations in one of three baskets at the front of the pavilion.
At about 2pm the caskets will be taken to a private funeral ceremony at Macquarie Park
Cemetery and Crematorium.
Irene will be cremated, while the rest of the family will be buried.
Brenda Lin will speak briefly at the memorial service, the first time she will have
appeared publicly since the murders.
The memorial service will also be attended by Federal Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull,
local MP Maxine McKew, and officials from the Chinese embassy.
On Friday, Mr Lin's father Yang Fei Lin, 75, reopened the family's Epping newsagency.
"This is the first day I feel lonely because this was the place my son and my daughter-in-law
and myself were working before, but today it's just me," he said through a translator.

Cyril
Saint Cyril (827–869) and Saint Methodius (825–885) were brothers and Greek churchmen. The brothers were born in Solon, a principal city in Macedonia, and their father was a nobleman of imperial Byzantium. Cyril's secular name was Constantine. He received a fine education and became a librarian to Hagia Sophia, a patriarch of the church, but resigned after a short time to enter a monastery where his brother was studying.
Having acquired a knowledge of Slavic, the brothers were sent to teach the gospel to the Slavs in Moravia. Some time later, the neighboring Germans charged them with heresy. Pope Nicholas I recalled them and exonerated them. The brothers then began a translation of the liturgy and the Bible into Slavic. Saint Methodius actually finished the work, even though the name of the alphabet is Saint Cyril's. Constantine adopted the name Cyril during his last illness, Cyril being his patron saint.

Only a little over a year old, the company is based in Harston, near Cambridge, and employs just four full-time staff. It operates our of a stable, complete with chickens -- redefining the term cottage industry" -- yet is turning out to be a rare dot-corn success story.
This year the site has achieved a 700 percent increase in usage across certain counties, including Corn-wall and Devon. Monthly page impressions have increased to 2.3 million and the company continues to sign new corporate backers, attracted by the way in which they can gain exposure to either a local, regional or national audience.
Members of communities are using their sites to rebuild links with other communities, both at home and abroad. The foot and mouth outbreak has proved to be a major catalyst for UKVillages. With many rural dwellers suffering financial loss as a result of the disease, communities are going online to help promote their villages, towns and regions, and to let people know they are open for business.
Visitors to the UKVillages site -- particularly those from abroad -- are also using it to trace relatives and friends and to plan visits to the UK. Rupert Dick, managing director of UKVillages, says: "We've been overwhelmed by the response and enthusiasm of the public. We seem to have filled a much-needed niche for communities, holidaymakers and people keen to find out more about the UK.
"The argument that the Web can kill community life has been totally refuted. The feedback we get is that we are helping rekindle traditional community spirit in a modern way."
Partnerships with organisations such as Post Office Counters, Shell Direct, Norwich & Peterborough and The Cheshire Building Society have proved that large businesses believe in supporting community life. "They find our site a valuable medium for carrying targeted messages to their customers at a grass roots level," says Dick.
Ken Pilkington, e-commerce manager at the Cheshire Building Society, agrees: "UKVillages is a great way of bringing seemingly diverse activities together to support the community."
Local sponsors include pubs, car dealers and B&Bs, while regional sponsors include companies such as Shell Direct, which distributes home heating oil. National supporters include Calor Gas and the Post Office. Calor is using the site to promote its own Calorbbqshop.co.uk. It also sponsors a monthly e-mail newsletter for UKVillages, called Tirtle-Tattle, which is sent out to all registered users - 10,000 at the last count.
Calor Gas events communications manager Suzanne Weir says: 'The site is a perfect fit for us. We came upon UKVillages because of our longstanding, 15-year sponsorship of Village of the Year. We are keen to promote Calor Gas's green credentials and its interest in the rural community, which don't always come through in the general perception of the brand. We are involved with Villageofrheyear.org and have gradually developed more links to the UKVillages site."
Calor has asked UKVillages to judge the new IT category in this year's Village of the Year competition. "If villages are to survive they have to use new technologies like the Internet," says Weir.
Sally Hopkins, spokeswoman for Post Office Counters, says the company has been working with UKVillages since last October. "The Post Office is at the heart of most communities, so we are a natural fit for UKVillages," she says. The deal gives each sub-post office the option to place details about itself on the part of UKVillages that relates to their local area. These details might include opening times, special offers and new retail lines. "It gives them the opportunity to update their information and customise their offers at a local level," says Hopkins. There are now about 1,000 sub-post offices using the site, our of a total of 18,000 nationwide.
A recent addition to the site is a property channel, which gives immediate access to all property available in the area. It has links to online property specialists such as Asserrahome.com, 08004homes.com. Primelocarioncom, and to local estate agents. Other channels include "Jobs in the area" and "Staying in the area", which offer advertising opportunities for employers and hotels. A new departure is the launch of The Posh Channel, which has links to Country Life online and is spon sored by Hiscox Online, a provider of high-end insurance. There is also a link to cooker manufacturer Aga and Forrnum & Mason.
Hiscox has sponsored a number of communities on the site, which it knows have high-value properties. London has been divided into 385 communities, which fits the remit of the site if you consider the capital as a collection of "urban villages". This puts UKVillages into direct competition with the Myvillage Network and a number of other sites.
But Ellie Stoneley, marketing director of UKVillages, claims there is no one else doing exactly the same thing: "Every community on our site shares information with its neighbours, and all parts of our site are inrerlinked."
The cost of appearing on the site ranges from [pound]100 for local sponsors to [pound]10,000 for a regional and "upwards from there" for a national sponsorship. Stoneley says the average spend is "about [pound]15,000".
The site has promoted itself through reciprocal deals with a national radio group and local newspapers, and through PR. It has also done a lot of work ensuring it has a high profile on search engines, with individual communities now appearing on a Google search. And it has Web page links to 7,000 others, including local government and local information sites. But the best form of marketing, says Stoneley, has been word of mouth.
She says the company developed all its technology in-house. And she doesn't anticipate the number of staff ever growing beyond about 25 people - although it is unclear whether the number of chickens will also be restricted.
